The Story Behind the Spotlight

A Musician Who Built a Stage for Other Musicians

Jools Holland has spent decades doing something Honky Tonk Music Association considers essential to the survival of real music: putting musicians in front of an audience and allowing the performance itself to matter.

Born Julian Miles Holland in London, Jools began playing piano by ear as a child and was already performing in pubs while still young.

His career eventually took him into Squeeze, television, broadcasting, composition, recording and the leadership of an orchestra built around rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, jazz, soul and rock and roll.

But the Jools Holland story is larger than the list of places he has performed.

Again and again, he has used his own platform to place other musicians in front of the audience.

Established legends, new performers, singers from different generations and musicians from dramatically different genres have all found themselves standing on a Jools Holland stage.

The music gets the stage.

That commitment to musicianship, performance and musical discovery is at the center of Jools Holland’s 2026 HTMA recognition.

Music on Television

Giving Live Music a Home

Jools Holland’s television career has run alongside his life as a musician rather than replacing it.

During the 1980s he became known to British television audiences through The Tube, the groundbreaking Channel 4 music program.

Then, in 1992, came Later… with Jools Holland.

The program created something increasingly valuable: a television setting where artists could actually perform.

Rock, soul, blues, jazz, pop, country, folk and music that refuses to fit neatly inside any category have shared the same stage.

The annual Hootenanny became another extension of that idea — musicians gathered together, performances moving from one artist to another and live instrumentation remaining at the center of the room.

Related HTMA recognition: Later… with Jools Holland is separately recognized with the 2026 International Music Legacy Television Award. That recognition belongs to the television program and is not counted as an additional personal award for Jools Holland.

At the Center of Everything

The Piano

Long before the television studios, orchestras and international collaborations, there was the piano.

Jools Holland’s official biography says he could play fluently by ear by the age of eight.

That instrument has remained at the center of his musical identity ever since.

His playing draws heavily from boogie-woogie, rhythm and blues, jazz and blues, musical traditions where the piano is not decoration — it drives the performance.

Whether surrounded by an orchestra or sitting beside another musician, the piano is still where Jools Holland’s story becomes simplest: musician first.

A Separate HTMA Spotlight

Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra

The orchestra has its own story — and its own 2026 HTMA recognition.

What began as the Jools Holland Big Band grew over the years into the large touring ensemble now known as Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.

The orchestra puts rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, boogie-woogie, rock and roll and live musicianship together on one stage.

Its singers and collaborators have also become an important part of that musical world, including Ruby Turner, whose long association with Jools Holland has produced memorable recordings and live performances.
